Questerr...I hope you are prepared to be descended upon. Seriously though...I have quickly found that there are many ways to play the market game. And people develop "style" preferences. My preference is to be patient. Buy and hold. I have some other "side" money that I have used for trading...frankly I am not very good at it. I bought TA books and realized that I just don't want to learn Technical Analysis in the depth needed to be involved in trading. When I first heard about the act of "shorting" it seemed like a scary proposition. It also seemed through my reading research that many pundits did not consider shorting as noble a betting procedure as going long. Now I personally am not making any commentary on trading, shorting etc. I can appreciate if people want to play it the way it works for them. And if they can be successful at trading, shorting, longing...then more power to them. I guess the line gets blurred for me when a bias of style develops and people take an absolute firm stance and then VILIFY others for theirs. And it does seem, on the surface at least...that a short play would be based on momentum and therefore not tend to develop a more bullish sentiment for the company and their long term business model. But I have also found that some shorts do very thorough research and I can learn from their information (I may not always like the presentation of that information---that is where the emotion can come in) and I have also found that there can be different interpretations of the same information depending on your "style" of market play. Ultimately, I find myself still leaning towards "buy and hold" I have learned to take ideas, viewpoints, advice, feelings and personalities here...with a grain of salt. And I'll be darn...I take my own with a grain of salt too! I am still on major learning curve, which includes remaining cautious at SI as well as in the market.
