WTSherman,

Do you prefer WT, Sherman, or WTSherman?

Regarding Microsoft's competitiveness and their many wins against large competitors and the possible perception Microsoft's large wins are based upon non-competitive activities.

Some history:

1. Apple made a rather large business stumble when they decided not to establish an ISV channel. Instead, they sold a "closed" system. Meanwhile, Microsoft had an open API, which enabled thousands of developers (i.e. ISVs) to build their applications (i.e. momentum) to the MS operating system. This created shear volume of support for the MS OS and it also enabled sales teams from other companies (i.e. ISV sales) to indirectly promote the MS platform through the selling of their applications.

2. Microsoft was also in competition with IBM's OS/2 and OS/2 Warp.

RE: predatory practices

Intel absorbs more and more functions onto its chip just as Microsoft absorbs more and more functions into its OS.

The way this is done, is in my opinion, the real issue.
