For some reason which I REALLY don't understand China is talking about using TDD mode for 3G.

This is one aspect of the big picture where I feel I really lack understanding- how the particular standards dovetail with allotted frequency allocations. It's my understanding that WCDMA(Direct Sequence) requires one band 5mhz wide and that CDMA2000 will use 3x1.25 mhz(ie 3 multi 1.25mhz carrier) channels. TDD will use a block of yet another dimension.

This spectrum issue is/was a big deal because acceptance of a particular standard has spectrum/cost implications for carriers. In the US, CDMAone carriers did not want to have to buy( if available) new spectrum for 3g, whereas in Europe without new spectrum the GSMers would have to scrap their legacy networks and start over.In Europe, I believe we could therefore see CDMA overlays of GSM or greenfield CDMA2000 in spectrum now alotted to GSM but not used, or WCDMA but NOT CDMA2000 in brand new spectrum.

And once again, how will TDMA and GSM evolve to 3G here in the US?

If, and this is a big IF, my understanding is correct that these various spectrum needs are better addressed by multple modes/standards, then perhaps the right thing may actually have been done and the characterization of WCDMA as solely the attempt to hijack CDMA from QCOM is misleading.

Anyone out there with the real dope? Gregg, Clark, Walt?
