CMGI in Preliminary Discussions With Compaq

ANDOVER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 24, 1999--CMGI (Nasdaq:CMGI) announces that it is in preliminary discussions with respect to a possible acquisition of a controlling interest in Web portal and search engine AltaVista Company and the establishment of a strategic relationship with Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ).

The discussions are in a preliminary stage and there can be no assurance that a transaction will be consummated. CMGI does not plan to make any further public announcements with respect to this possible transaction unless and until a definitive agreement is reached.

Wierdness -- CMGI weaving like a drunken sailor this a.m. Went from +4 to -1 1/2 in the past 15 minutes. Suspect it is due to colliding Street interpretations of CMGI/Alta Vista and CMGI/Lycos scenarios. Market still trying to absorb the apparent sudden change in direction at CMGI. I would hope that as far as DW's chess board goes it wasn't all that sudden.
