Richard,

Any drilling in alluviam is tricky. There could be sections that are very porous and allow the water and the fines to drain into the surrounding material. Even with reverse circulation it is possible to wash the hole unless it is carefully cased. There are some techniques available for soil sampling. Some of these techniques involve augers and other methods of collection undisturbed samples. However, if there are rocks present, larger than the diameter of the drill hole, these techniques could not be used. I still think that trenches would be the best way to go.
