gov't intervention ... perpetuating the myth that gold is currency ...

Interesting comment, Ron, that opens doors to all sorts of digressions. But, I challenge your premise that governments perpetuate use of gold as currency. IMHO, governments have done everything they can to eliminate gold as a currency, and instead foist upon us fiat currencies that are intrinsically worthless. It could be argued that it is the people who insist that gold have value despite governmental efforts to the contrary. Think of some of the historical support for my case -- gold has had artificial prices set, been outlawed for private ownership, and when that didn't work, removed as a backing for fiat currencies. Still, none of this has been able to eliminate gold as a (almost) universally accepted store of value.

Hate to say things twice, but gold is currency. I've seen gold dust Spent, here in Colorado 1999(metro Denver) for groceries, gas,& clothing.
No, before you say it, it is not as widely accepted as "the coin of the realm". While I did not see the expenditure, I have seen shiny jewelers balances behind bars and near the register at some eateries, and been told they are in use there also.
No, I don't do it, never been decent at pannin, so don't know if taxes are paid or not.
