FWIW, that short piece is very poorly written and seems poorly researched. No specifics were given.

The article you refer to is a mouthpiece of manipulation.

Think about it! The unidentified "source" is supposedly privy to a private bid 3dfx made for S3. This indicates that the source is affiliated with either 3dfx, S3, or possibly DIMD. At the same time this "source" claims to have insider knowledge of all three next generation chips from S3, 3dfx and Nvidia. Considering the secrecy surrounding all three of these designs, I find it highly unlikely. Someone at DIMD may know about the S3 and Nvidia designs due to its relationship with both but its VERY doubtful if they would get the scoop on 3dfx's.

Assuming there is any factual info contained in the article, I would guess that 3dfx may have discussed combination with S3 at some time in the past since the S3 patent portfolio, texture compression, and low-cost chip design would go well with 3dfx's higher-end Voodoo products. In an attempt to throw gas on the fires of speculation, some DIMD or S3 executive leaks this out along with a comment speculating that 3dfx is having trouble with Napalm which supposedly "justified" the previous talks.

S3-3Dfx deal had legs

This whole thing is clear to me now. S3 has been leaking rumors about an S3/TDFX deal in order to bump the share price while in negotiations with DIMD. Share price was set on the merger last friday. The plain truth is that 3dfx could not afford to buy S3.

Mike told me earlier that his source was close to 3dfx. Now he's saying that 3dfx wants S3 for it's next generation chip because 3dfx's next generation chip doesn't have the features and functionality? This is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard. 3dfx has planned their "features and functionality" for their road map carefully. If they felt the "features and functionality" weren't good enough, they would change the product specs. They wouldn't buy another company. Even if it were true, 3dfx would never admit to having lesser technology.

It "has a smaller die size and is the only serious contender on the block". For that reason, 3DFx wanted S3.

This comment tips the hand of the informant. The source must definitely be from S3. S3 is the only company to gain from this comment and the previous ones. Unfortunately, Mike Magee appears to be an unwitting pawn in this game.

Anybody else remember...blue horseshoe loves S3...heh, heh.
