Mik, I like both Nem and Abx, but there is an advantage to ASA in that they invest in South African gold shares. The South African shares are very cheap compared to North American cos. Also, they pay, believe it or not, dividends. <g> The richest gold mines in the world are in South Africa, but they receive a discounted value because of the political climate. Also, ASA itself sells at a slight discount to its Net Asset Value. ASA also owns some DeBeers and the platinum stocks for diversification, which the North American cos. do not.

So, in general, ASA is cheaper but riskier. I like that right now.
