You are not insane, you are absolutely correct. The general investing public does not understand the motives of the analysts.

Not insane. Remember that paranoia is an unreasonable belief that others are conspiring against you. :-) Welcome to the thread.

Ben, I gave up on the analyst for MU a long time ago, their forecast are irrelivant, and many brokerage houses could save a lot of without them.(i'm talking MU). Many can't get the call right through next week let alone the qrt. or next year. I think it shows in the lack of any real movement
in the stock price up or down when one of them makes a call.
All you need to know with Micron is to follow the trend. It usually trades in any given year between 25 to 60 give or take a little. In between this range are many opportunities to go long or short. Micron is about as good as it gets for trading the swings, I've made a small living over the last 6 to 7 years with this stock. When you get down to it the bulls need the bears and bears need the bulls, this is what generates the swings. The only real difference between us is the bears think it's going to 0 and the bulls 100, in between there is a lot of money to be made!!!

Good Luck, Pat
