Unless we are cut off entirely, it is amazing the amount of stuff we absorb. Norman Podhoretz has written about going into the Army, and discovering that there was this whole world of popular culture, at that time mainly from radio and film, since tv was new, that he shared with the guys in his barracks. He was a Jewish kid from Brooklyn, with a literary bent and a degree from Columbia, and many of them were off the farm from the Midwest or South, and yet they all listened to Fred Allen and watched the Marx Brothers. He came to appreciate the role of the mass media in forming a common frame of reference...
