in a sense Joe's remark is correct: both companies faced two major questions: what will a merger do for each, and what will happen if they do not merge. Bob Mackin's response was that Ascend would have survived well enough but that consolidation is continuing and in time it would have been hurt. Lucent is notably weak in the Internetworking area, one reason why it bought Livingston, an ASND competitor in the ISP market; since the major growth is going to be in data by a huge margin it has to go there and won't get there from within.

But it's synergistic - a win-win for both and Joe Joe Kernan ought to know that.

IMO Joe is right. We can divide our positions by 2 without LU. From the only perspective that really matters to me here (show me the money) the LU buyout has made my day!
