WATCH FOR GOOD THINGS....The acqusition of Ascend, the fourth-largest maker of computer networking equipment, will help Lucent, which traditionally has supplied voice products for telecommunications companies, tackle the blurring markets of voice and data networks.

''Lucent now stands head and shoulders above the competition in its ability to deliver end-to-end, communications networks to service providers,'' said Lucent Chairman Rich McGinn.

Lucent now will benefit from Ascend's sophisticated data networking technology, while Lucent's deep pockets, marketing expertise and large sales force will put more muscle behind Ascend's products, analysts said.
