Your points are well taken, but we need to think about the inevitable consolidation which will take place in the next few years in and around the 'Net. To state the obvious, no 'startup' company will succeed against the likes of YHOO, RNWK, EBAY, AOL, etc.
That said, do you believe, as I do, that RNWK eventually will be bought by one of the 800 pound gorillas?

Software and Network Development

"However, the barriers to entry for new businesses on the net will be very low, leading to difficulty of the largest early players translating their lead into meaningful earnings."

Assuming that what Real Networks has accomplished was easy is a fools game.

What they've done is not easily replicated. Requiring an incredible effort both intellectually and monetarily.

Obviously there will be competing technologies. If RG and the people at Real Networks remain focused they can build a substantial company.
