Yea but is there any reason it'll be easier for them to go to WCDMA than CDMA2000?

No, there is probably no major technical reason why AT&T, for instance, should not upgrade to MC mode vs DS mode (and in fact with limited spectrum available in the US for 3g, the MC mode might be preferable). But, having said that, I'm sure that the designers of the DS mode, being more familiar with GSM and NA-TDMA than CDMAOne, will design some of the protocols to be more like the TDMA systems than CDMAOne etc. (for instance, on the yahoo thread I was bemoaning the fact that there are there is a whole nightmare world of internal interfaces in telecom equipment which are supposed to be standard but rarely are. It is very hard to mix and match equipment from different vendors.) This might give a small cost advantage to W-CDMA when upgrading from GSM or NA-TDMA, but nothing like as decisive as the decision by the CDMAOne operators to go with MC.
