Down around Carbondale there are several old coal mines that the IDNR gives tours of. The area south of Peoria was full of coal veins that came to the surface. Peabody coal did a lot of strip mining there, actually a 3 county area and now there are 100s of lakes in the area from those old mines. It has the largest population of giant canada geese in the world over there.

There are indeed massive coal deposits under Illinois. Unfortunately, due to the sulfur problem most of those reserves are largely uneconomic now. One of the once largest holders of coal reserves in Illinois is in the process of deeding much of it's remaining reserves to county governments. $1 in exchange for reserves under thousands of acres per county.

On the poor country, poor people statement - parts of the deep southern part of the state resemble Appalachia. I know, as I've lived in both places.
