No, you're right. I believe SOP 97-2 says that you can only recognize revenue when the functionality is "delivered" to the customer. In some cases "delivered" means shipped (e.g. additional seats), in other cases it means installed (e.g. initial server license). Smart companies try to be conservative and recognize only after signoff, as you describe. If you promise the customer functionality that is going to be in a future release, then you may not recognize revenue until that functionality is delivered.

But I'm just an engineer. Where the hell is Clam Clam when you need him?
