James,

As I understand it, it is
socket compatibility - not necessarily the ability to run the same software - as I
understand it Alpha can run NT. But, would it not be possible to switch
motherboards in order to take advantage of higher speed now, both in the CPU and
in the bus and still run whatever software you're using now?

Alpha CPUs are intended for higher performance and price markets than Pentiums, Celerons and AMD chips. Compaq's home page doesn't even mention running Windows 95 or 98, mentions Tru64 UNIX, OpenVMS, Microsoft Windows NT, and Linux. So, they'd compete with Xeon now, Merced next year, etc. I don't know how many Alphas Compaq sells, but I'd bet not many. Sun would compete more wrt volume, but they don't run NT. Again, it's back to AMD as the most direct competition for Intel.

James - <as I understand it Alpha can run NT>

The Alpha is competition to Intel, because of this compatibility. SUNW is also competition, because both Intel and SPARC can run Solaris. Intel is nipping at companies such as these lower and more recently mid range business.

We do have an Alpha guy that comes around who's pretty strident in his support of his chosen architecture, alpharob, aka Rob Young.

Re: Alpha running NT

While Alpha very nicely runs NT, many common applications have not been ported to that platform. That has made using Alpha based workstations more difficult for most businesses. Alpha based servers are very fast and very good.
