FYI...MSD is Speaking about the Future...Listen up <G>... <<Friday June 25, 12:31 pm Eastern Time Dell CEO sees bright PC future ATLANTA, June 25 (Reuters) - The chief executive of Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq:DELL - news). said Friday the future of personal computers is solid, and equipment that some experts believe will replace desktop computers will instead complement them. ''I believe the PC has an incredibly bright future,'' Michael Dell said in an address at the annual Forbes CEO Forum here. He said that other equipment, including two-way pagers, devices with mini-browsers and other interactive technology, ''will only addict users even more'' to their PCs. ''They are very complementary devices, as opposed to displacing devices,'' Dell said. One development that will push sales of PCs is higher-speed access to the Internet, which is becoming more widespread as cable television companies enter the market, Dell said during a question and answer period that followed his speech. Fifty percent of the people who access the Internet by cable replace their PCs within a year because they find their old computers are not fast enough, he said. ''The reason is that the bottleneck shifts from the (telephone) line to the PC,'' Dell said. ''You want a PC that can handle that.'' Dell is a pioneer in bypassing retail outlets to sell direct to the consumer. Dell said that the future for computer retail stores is ''not very good.'' He said that the only people who patronize the stores in large numbers are first-time computer users -- ''not even the first-time buyer.'' Dell said people familiar with computers, who use them at their offices, for example, are comfortable buying them on the Internet or through mail-order houses.>> Best Regards, Scott
