BellSouth said it will buy about $500 million in cellular network equipment from
Sweden's Ericsson during the next five years to expand its wireless systems.

The order includes 17 switches for directing calls on BellSouth's wireless networks and
1,400 cell sites and that send and receive calls from cellular phones.

The contract is a big win for No. 3 cellular-phone maker Ericsson, which has lost business
to Lucent Technologies and other rivals in recent months.

BellSouth said it awarded Ericsson the order after evaluating bids from Lucent, Nortel
Networks, and Hughes Electronics, a division of General Motors.

The contract replaces a previous agreement Atlanta-based BellSouth had with Hughes,
which recently expired, said Kristie Madara, a BellSouth spokeswoman.
