I have never been in on an IPO -- others here have. But my understanding is that those who are brought in on many other deals are required to buy more stock in the aftermarket to goose up the price. This is a for of collusion and stock manipulation which raises both legal and ethical questions that I am not equipped to deal with -- others might amplify these points. But the end result is IPOs that flame out after a relatively short and spectacular entry into the marketplace.
