Many of the availability guarantees from vendors as well as Service Level Agreements require customers to adhere to certain required actions - like installing OS patches and having reasonable backup systems in place as well as training and certification of personnel.

of course each additional "9" comes at a very high cost - aCharles Schwab uses a bank of IBM and Hitachi Mainframes...are they more available than Unix Systems? maybe but its a lot cheaper to buy Unix based systems and most ecommerce applications arent availble on mainframes - and im not aware of an OS/390 port of Quake either.
