June 25, 1999 (BEIJING) -- Networking and multimedia technologies are flourishing in China and will continue to thrive in the next century, according to Zhang Zhigang, vice-minister of the State Economic and Trade Commission (SETC).

China has assigned priority to developing these technologies in its Ninth Five-Year Plan (1996-2000), with a view toward promoting the overall information sector, Zhang said.

China Telecom maintains a comprehensive public data and multimedia telecommunications network. The network had more than 1.5 million customers in 1998 and is expected to have a total of 3 million this year.

China's network business was worth RMB10 billion (US$1.2 billion) in 1998.

The SETC will soon hold an international exhibition on networking and multimedia technology applications in Beijing to help develop the information industry, Zhang added.
