Wow, what kind of spells did he think you were casting? And I agree with you that churches increase the fears of their believers- the better to strengthen the position of the church. But why are people drawn to this in the first place? I was never drawn to anything like that- rather the opposite. If any group ever got too rigid and controlling I was out the door- same with my husband. But clearly there are people (lots of people) who want to be told what to think- or at the very least who do not resist being told what to think. I wonder why. I stated some time ago that maybe it was genetic. I wonder if anyone is doing research on the "believability quotient" in humans- (this is my my my term and nobody better steal it.) For the survival of our species it might be good to know more about why people are capable of group think- and under what circumstances, etc etc.
