There is, imho, a playing field, on which no play occurs, that levels us all.

I get depression, and it's not that bad. I mean, clinical depression, where the doctors give me drugs. Zoloft. Wellbutrin. I'd rather be depressed than take drugs for it. And it comes and goes, partly seasonal, partly situational, and then there's the constant low-grade endogenous background hum. Dysthymia. I know it's not me because I am an optimist. My husband has dysthymia, too, but he's a pessimist, and I can see how the difference in drives is affected differently by endogenous dysthymia.

I know depression comes in all shades of black - I think you are talking about the worst depressions. But the best depression is no picnic, just not as bad as "knowing all is fucked."
