Re: I believe the PC companies should be offering whole house systems, house nets, servers, slim down net PCs, a turn key packages if you well and yes designer PCs and yes ISP services..

Greg, you aren't following my point, which is about business, profitability and market timing.

These things you mention are great, and will come to pass. However, the market for some of these concepts is no where near achieving critical mass ... someone will have to create the market and demand. That someone (or group of first in the water companies) stand a chance of loosing money in the short term as a market incubator.

Try and look at things from a business perspective, not a techie one... this is what Dell has constantly done and why they continue to take in the lion's share of the PC industry profits every quarter.

In the PC business, consumer loyalty is generally predicated on price so being first carries little guarantee of owning the market.

So, why be first? Why not increase your chances for profitability by waiting for the market to become what it becomes, not what you think it might become, so you can use the information to craft the 'right' strategy?

I know, stodgy, boring, unglamourous and if Dell isn't one of the first, they'll be left out in the cold...

Dell is stepping out of the box in a controlled fashion... not as fast and reckless as some would like. But profitability is most important in my book. The 'box' coupled with the 'right' packages
and services, offer Dell the opportunity to grow revenues from $25B today to ~$100B in 5 years. I find it hard to understand why some are not pleased with Dell's focus on this opportunity, instead, lambasting them for not pursing every possible new gizmo, gadget and
experimental offering under the sun.

Thats all...
