Thanks for the Scientific American reference. Which, incidentally, has a good article on why human cloning is a good thing. Just one example anyway = stem cell replacement which means better disease treatment. About 93% of people think human cloning is unethical. That is because they are ignorant, not because it actually is unethical, immoral, foolish or anything bad. It is the usual Luddite reaction to anything new and unintelligible and possibly threatening. Which means it is sure to be a place to make as much money as with CDMA, which breached the laws of physics according to some people. scientificamerican.com . Then there are genetic vaccines. This will make a lot of money too! scientificamerican.com And, fractal antennae [something I'm sure you are all fascinated by - Ramsey can read it while playing golf or during quiet spells at baseball]. These will be good in the second constellation Globalstar phones when they have monstrous antennae on the satellites. The existing Globalstar handset aerials are simply too big and dorky to be widely acceptable. scientificamerican.com Incidentally, I can report that the Globalstar handset by Qualcomm sounds great, at both ends. Yes, I got to try it out in real life. Phoned home from San Diego - [actually, to Tarken on a GSM handset bicycling around Tamaki Drive in Auckland]. Since there aren't many satellites, I didn't get to try out handoff and I'm not totally certain that it wasn't really going into the building and straight into the terrestrial carriers rather than via satellite. Walking around under a small tree made it a bit unhappy and even dropped one call. The Iridium phone by comparison was poor quality, though not too bad if the choice is no call. The receiving end of the Iridium calls was much worse than the receiving end of the Globalstar calls. I also got to try the ThinPhone and the Globalstar call was as good in voice quality, though not as robust a connection as the ThinPhone. Links to the satellites really are flimsy and line of sight without trees and rainclouds seems essential, but the voice quality is excellent when properly connected. The ThinPhone was really good! It'll sell heaps. When there is only one satellite in view and it's at a low angle, the link is quite weak and the quality is dodgy [meaning not very good]. Also, I was reliably informed that the pdQ is now going out on trucks to the retailers. The Winn Vacation Effect is obviously much more powerful magic than the Su Vacation Effect. On the last day, Q! hit $137.50 and has fallen since. I recommend you all send money to keep me on permanent vacation. The magic was so powerful that the Dow did not crash to 8099 on 21 June despite intense prognostications and avid soothsaying. It must be that it will be 21 July 1999 and only down to 8222 [to adjust for The New Paradigm Effect whereby the Dow will reach 16,000 by Feb 2002]. When all the Y2K computer people get real jobs early next year when the Y2K is a big fizzer, there will be a boost to The New Paradigm, which is now officially adopted by Alan Green$pan, Paul Krugman and all as the explanation for a roaring economy without inflation. That's the short version! Mqurice [When computers do their stuff properly, Mqurice spelling will be autocorrected]
