I think Linux is a little hard to understand for most of the AOL crowd, especially the one who will be getting $200 computers. These people will be first time users. I don't think the people who already have $1000+ computers will drop their current computers for less powerful but still functional free or $200 computers.

They won't have windows on them, that's for sure. Windows itself costs much more than $200.

My guess is these computers will have a costomized operating system (in the same way that a TI calculator has) optimized for high speed web access and downloads. It can be a very no-frills operating system, these people are not going to be writing their own Java or C++ code.

If I were making this operating system, once optimizing it I would focus on making the User Interface as user friendly and looking like the AOL home page as possible. This could easily be done using code developed by AOL in conjunction with SUNW and IBM using NSCP technology.

I actually don't know of an OS that is optimized for internet at this point in time. Windows certainly isn't... it treats internet reading in the same way it treats reading a disk.

Just some of my thoughts on the matter. Even if AOL never gets around to doing all this -- it is what should be done and what I would do if I were in a place I could say what should be done

Good Morning to ya
