Interesting parallels re: network/cable TV:biz.yahoo.com Thursday June 24, 7:17 pm Eastern Time Schwab exec sees Merrill Lynch online success ATLANTA, June 24 (Reuters) - The president of Charles Schwab Corp. (NYSE:SCH -news), a pioneer discount and online brokerage, said Thursday Merrill Lynch & Co.(NYSE:MIE - news). the largest full service brokerage, can be ''very successful'' in its move into Schwab's speciality. ''I think they can be very successful,'' David Pottruck, who is also co-chief executive of the San Francisco-based firm, said. ''I have great respect for Merrill Lynch.'' Merrill Lynch announced on June 1 that it would introduce its Internet-based service in December. ''They are a very capable company with a big brand image,'' Pottruck said while participating in a round-table discussion at the annual Forbes CEO Forum in Atlanta. Pottruck dismissed suggestions from other discounters that Merrill Lynch is entering the field too late to be effective. ''I don't think the game is over,'' he said. ''Some of my online competitors suggest it's too late. I don't think it's too late.'' He said that the inroads Charles Schwab and other online discounters have made forced Merrill Lynch's hand. ''The issue is that there's such a clear and huge threat that it forces them to take (this) up,'' Pottruck said. He said that Merrill had to be taken seriously because it is a technological powerhouse. The Forbes round-table participants discussed new technologies that could disrupt companies' tried-and-true strategies and force them to adopt new tactics or lose out to competitors.Another panelist, Michael Jordan, who was chief executive of CBS Corp.(NYSE:CBS - news) until he retired in December, said broadcast television missed the boat by fighting with cable-TV operators instead of cooperating with them. Now cable TV has the upper hand while broadcast television continues to lose viewers. ''Broadcasters didn't realize there was a whole new business system evolving -- not just the technology, but a business system that had superior economics,'' Jordan said.
