I went back and reviewed the annual report last night. I discovered that the XCOM r&d was primarily purchased because of its potential to offer an interface between legacy networks and LVLT's nascent IP-based network. It is not stated specifically there, and I am now unsure where I got the idea, that part of the XCOM research was directed toward development of the Softswitch. So maybe my presumed link between the dubious status of the proprietary Softswitch and the XCOM purchase is unfounded. I am not sure any longer.

In any case, I also noticed in the annual report that LVLT forthrightly told the public that when voice over technology was demonstrated earlier this year the demonstration was performed with BOTH the Softswitch and the LU switch. The report also emphasizes that the company will not take a service to market before it is ready to do what it should, i.e. offer quality indistinguishable from switched networks and do so without the hassle of entering in a long string of digits. FWIW
