While I have never been that depressed, I have been around two people who have been that far in. I recall one person telling me (in more and shorter words) her sense of amazement/bewilderment/somatic betrayal at the total nature of the shift, the subornment her machinery of perception and cognition endured. From such a vantage suicide is not a termination, but a relief - a debt paid not fully but in the least bad way available.
Maybe I'm "tuned into" such things. I have no trouble at all imagining a complete loss or discontinuity of awareness, even identity. Some mornings I wake up, remember the unbroken braid of my life and subvocalize an aimless prayer of thanks for continuity, for the comfort of the mundane.
