Yougang, Time to pick up some AUgust Calls on monday methinks!!! The August 221/2 look pretty good value. From: anandmeister: The biggest thing on everyone's mind right now is AMD's Athlon processor. The press release was announced earlier this week, and unfortunately I couldn't post it due to the obvious lack of Internet access in the lab. For the skeptics out there, AMD is at 600MHz and there is living breathing proof sitting next to me. Now before everyone goes AMD happy and starts burning their P3's, be warned, just because AMD made a press release on the Athlon doesn't mean that you'll be able to order one right away. I've received a lot of email about the Athlon (aka K7) and why AMD is "delaying" it. To make things clear, AMD isn't "delaying" it, they are actually doing the same thing Intel does with all of their chips. When Intel released the Pentium III 550, you could pretty much pick up a phone and buy one that day. When AMD released the K6-3 400, you could pick up a phone and buy one...a couple of weeks later. The ability to supply chips has been one of AMD's tragic flaws in the past, that flaw won't be a problem any more with the Athlon. That's the reason you won't be able to buy an Athlon for a little while longer (also the reason why you won't see a review until that day either...AMD pulled a very smart move here from their point of view, but before you castrate them for not letting reviewers post anything until the official release date, keep in mind that Intel does the same thing. Whether it is "right" or not is up to you to decide). I'm not going to tease you all any further with "AMD rulez" or "Intel ownz" posts until the day of the K7 launch, honestly I could have posted a K7 "preview" (much like the K6-3 preview of last year) about two months ago...but the chip that I took numbers from two months ago isn't the same Athlon that you'll be buying. The K6-3 was a different story, the performance of the K6-3 didn't change much (if any at all) between the day I previewed it and the official launch date. A K7 preview on AnandTech wouldn't have done AMD any justice, and would've hurt them, that's the reason you didn't see anything from me, not because AMD tied me down with a NDA (that came after the decision not to post was made ;)...). That's the last of that story on AnandTech till Aug...err I mean, till AMD officially releases the Athlon ;)
