<< A missing U.S. money manager suspected of absconding with up to $3 billion portrayed himself as a wealthy, benevolent playboy when detectives questioned him in 1997, according to police documents made available on Friday.

The 1997 documents, made available by Greenwich police, shed light on the bizarre personal life of Martin Frankel, who disappeared shortly before a fire on May 5 destroyed business records at his $3 million mansion in Greenwich, Connecticut.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has said it was investigating whether Frankel, 44, looted insurance companies in several states of up to $1 billion they had given him to invest.
