Meathead: Thanks for sharing your insights on DELL's commitment to fine tuning its offerings for the consumer and small business arenas. Timing is everything in this world <G>....The following passages from this afternoon's CNET article communicate a lot, IMO...

<<Despite the new emphasis outside the PC box, Dell is not ignoring the computer. Several of the new initiatives emanate from the hardware that Dell sells. Everett said Dell is putting more "netness" in its PCs and giving its computers a new "ID"--or new look.

"Technology exists to do powerful systems in new [designs] thus making form and function just as important as the raw performance was a while ago," he said.

One of the most flashy design forays will be all-in-one PCs that combine a large liquid crystal display with the core electronics resulting in a lightweight "luggable" computer, according to Everett. "Maybe not something that people can take with them on trips but something they can take home for the weekend," he said. "We believe there's a lot more we can do with this design beyond what Gateway is doing," he said.

Quiet reorganization
All of this is happening against a backdrop of a quiet reorganization and reconceptualization of products and markets. As Dell puts more "netness" into its redesigned boxes, it is basing strategies on a three-pronged approach of e-products, e-services, and e-support, according Everett. This will manifest itself in new e-services and e-support announcements over the next several months, according to John Thompson, a Dell spokesperson. >>

DELL is still very nimble and seems to be able to re-invent itself quickly and efficiently -- just like Microsoft...!! I like the idea of a new "e-services campaign" that is supposed to be coming soon. That makes a lot of sense for DELL -- a hardware provider that clearly walks its talk. I expect that DELL may use the internet channel to deliver a range of complementary products and e-services. Sounds like there are some good reasons to be patient. DELL's ability to execute is legendary and I have high expectations for their new internet efforts.

meathead...never said a negative thing about you...but if it helps your ego, i'll accept your childish barbs....

recent dell press release is that they will "stay ahead of the trends" to maintain market leadership....guess that puts a crimp into your "fast follower" approach...

i guess i'm not a businessman......neither is everett....you win meathead...you're the greatest...all one has to do is ask you...i'm not impressed.

Meathead, I think Dell is coming out with a new design precisely because they realized Gateway had one-upped them and gotten a lot of attention. Your perspective seemed a bit too complacent to me (not intended as insult). To use G&K terminology, since I frequent that thread, Dell is in the fight for its life not to be turned back from a prince to a chimp. It's important to be perceived as industry leader and innovator, which they keep saying they are--as Ed keeps pointing out, perception of leadership is more than half the battle. Gateway is making smart moves and they certainly have impressed me of late. Since Imac is profitable, i.e. cool design and higher price, this kind of computer could be as well--my point was Dell should continue to aggressively pursue that segment as well as the under 1K segment, and in hummingbird internet/high tech years, watching and waiting is not wise. And I agree w/ Ed, I wouldn't be surprised if they sooner or later went to handheld device as well. They need to. If what they want to do is "more of the same and even better" then they need to redefine "more".
