A S --- another announcement,,, SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jun 25, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE via COMTEX) -- 3ComCorp. today announced its sponsorship of the 3Com Founders Chair at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to support a position for distinguished researchers in computer communication capability. 3Com Chairman and CEO Eric Benhamou made the announcement following a panel discussion on the importance of research and development programs at academic institutions. The panel included Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of the World Wide Web and the inaugural holder of the 3Com Founders Chair, and Dr. Robert Metcalfe, the inventor of Ethernet and founder of 3Com. "The need for long-term fundamental research is greater today than at any point in the last twenty years, yet support in most areas has been flat or declining for more than a decade," said Benhamou, who serves on the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC). "The 3Com Founders Chair is an important step in reinvigorating research efforts that hold the key to U.S. economic growth and continued technological leadership." 3Com is contributing $333,000 toward sponsorship of the chair. Founders of 3Com and other supporters have also made contributions for a total $2 million endowment. The 3Com chair is a first for MIT in that its primary purpose is to support distinguished researchers. Traditionally, such chairs have been designated exclusively for professors in MIT's academic departments. Tim Berners-Lee is Principle Research Scientist at the Laboratory for Computer Science at MIT, and director of the World Wide Web Consortium, an organization headquartered at LCS, whose purpose is to continue to develop the capabilities and usefulness of the Web toward its full potential.
