A short sale has to involve :

checking with the "stock loan" dept. (of one's brokerage firm) to see if shares are available to be borrowed.

borrowing those shares (from "longs" who signed the stock loan provision on their margin account agreement).

taking those borrowed shares and selling them "out there" in the real world.

Don't believe puts count as shorts any more than calls count as longs. JMO, though.
