Prior to the SA finds in the 1880s Brazil was the top diamond producer in the world. Total carat production for Brazil puts it in 9th place for 47,101,000 carats.(Diamond Sources and Production:Past Present and Future..by Alfred Levinson, John Gurney and Melissa Kirkley)
Here is one company that produced on a low grade for 20 years...
<<Mineracao Tejucana SA (''Tejucana''), a Brazilian registered company with diamond mining interests along the Jequitinhonha River in north-east Minas Gerais State, Brazil.
Tejucana undertook dredging operations along the Jequitinhonha River for over 20 years treating up to 6.5 million m(3) of gravel per annum and recovering up to 65,000carats of diamonds and 4,800 ounces of gold per annum before ceasing production in 1996. Extensive mining records show that over 700,000 carats were recovered from approximately 20 kilometres of the 105 kilometres of contiguous mining leases along the river. Mining and exploration claims held by Tejucana total approximately 10,000 hectares with stated remaining resources standing at 335 million m(3) at an average
grade of 0.008 carats/m(3). Tejucana also owns significant amounts of equipment and infrastructure including 4 large-scale bucket wheel dredges, which have been under care and maintenance>>
I also have a list of diamonds that were registered that came off CNB claims they list fancies recovered that ranged up to 840 carats.
There were numerous over 100 carats, there were at least 4 or 5 in the 400 carat range....Thats what got Jennings hot...huge diamonds find one 400-600 carat fancy that would be worth hundreds of millions of dollars...A 722 carat reported found several weeks ago on a tributary that feeds the Rio Do Sono .
also....
<<(Thomas Micheals mining and production)
<<The earliest productive mines were in the Golconda region of India, particularly along the Kristna River. After 1725 this mining district was gradually eclipsed in importance by the diamond deposits of Brazil. Diamonds were first mined there along the Jequitinhonha River, in the Diamantina area of the state of Minas Gerais.>>
Food for thought.....DD
