I've never read it. I'd like to in order to understand the context. I just checked out some web sites. It's about the Spanish Civil War?
Or set there, at least?

I spent three days and two long nights awake with a group of young friends. On the dawn of the second long night, a teenage boy set on the hearth and gabbed on and on as only teenagers can do. Life was soooo bad. I lay on the couch, nearing forty and damn tired. We were on the sun porch that has three walls of glass looking out off the cliff to the hill and woods beyond. The sun was rising and sky burned shades of orange. He kept asking why he should live. I pointed out the window, "for that. there ain't nothing else you can count on. but look at it. what does anything matter when you can set your eyes on that, and feel the hope that it brings" He being an artist sorta got it, or started to. He's still alive, at least.
