"Bye da tine we got to Woodstock we wuz Haf A Millyun Strong".
Blue, please thank Jed for "Bye da tine we got to Woodstock".
Far Out.
Wow, so evocative of memories of those times. The hippy-house aroma of waterbeds candles and exotic spices wafted from the internet while reading ...what ticker is that smell-o-vision thing Jed did? Yep We were shattered and coming together as a generation in those times, weren't we?! I guess we were all trying to start from scratch to figure out where we were going next. We'd been through almost 30 years straight of war (WWII, Korea, Nam). We'd all grown up with nuke drills as schoolchildren (go to the basement, line up against the wall, no talking, crouch and cover your heads with your arms now, children)and a total reverse of the culture our parents knew. We rejected anything corporate resembling the '50's. We wanted Our Own.
I was a non-PC hippy girl so I caught some flak for being bougeois and uptight from some PC hippys who felt betrayed after uncovering what lay beneath the surface of the Real Hippie Artwork I did upon learning Not Only Was I Not Tripping All The Time...but I Was A Fake!
I just couldn't Clone To It Completely! Incense made my eyes water, I ate things like meatloaf and mashed potatoes, listened to doo-wops as often as to Crosby Stills, worked at a real job, unabashedly loved and admired my parents, trusted some Over-30's, wasn't in agreement about "first there must be a time of anarchy", often wore a bra, bought my produce at the grocery store because it was cheaper than organic, corporate climbers longhair hippys and soldiers alike were my friends and/or dates, liked a good martini instead of beer or wine, drank Cokes and iced tea instead of always juice or spring water, didn't party til I passed out on the floor w/ memory blank.
So I was under suspicion for being too straight maybe even a cop.
But all these non-PC sins were usually balanced by the conspicuous absence of a tv at my hippy beachhouse decorated with art, candles, psychedelic spool coffee tables, etc - with the stereo as the only electronic entertainment and that Was the PC term used to explain why no tv. Way back when, to give up the boobtube was an ideal of detachment from the Amerikan Kulture that was very admirable but not many could ultimately do it in those days. But What I Didn't Tell Was The Real Reason that I'd traded my tv for a needed car repair at first...only to quickly discover before I could afford to buy another how I could better force myself to make more artwork instead of kicking back with tv when I had nothing else to do! So I didn't have a tv for 10 years. I made more friends that way...by not confessing my Mortal Sins of needing money from sales of the artwork to supplement my pay from my p/t job to live, and so most important was the no-tv discipline was for reasons of Career Ambition as an artist. While I allowed the assumption of PC hippiehood to blossom into the counterculture acceptance it deserved I got away clear with "straight" habits like drinking coffee in the morning that others would have been ostracized for. Sometimes even some of the coolest guys the legends of those times pursued me til I allowed myself to be caught (won't be Naming Names but you'd recognize them) said I was so beautiful though I'd always deny it & change the subject - & so sometimes on a real good day in my secret thoughts had to agree I must be. I tried 2B anyway.
I know what Jed must be wondering by now....was I like other hippy girls about, you know....? Tell Jed that "Joan wuzint ez NawT ez sumadem hippygals but Joan wuz NawTer den hur parints wooda wantid her 2B ef deyd nownboutit. She probly woodina REEsistid no nice hunkerly longhair warvet fer 2 long ez longas he wuz makin sumkinda effort ta show he wuz a-hankerin fer hur femail kumpanyunship eddur in doze daze". Jed'll know Zackly Where I Was Coming From.

Joan
