>36th to 48th and found a street that is all jewelry stores. It
was amazing...I guess it was the jewelry district. Sort of like the garment district. This street is straight out of
the 20's. Doesn't look like anything has been modernized. Just shop after shop of old old jewelry stores.<

I was THERE. One of the two times I went In. I found one store that had a rock I could almost afford. After an hour of wangling, it became honestly affordable. Two months later I proposed. It's in one of these tall stick-out settings, so Spouse only wears it on special occasions. One fine day I'll take it to a local, talented, very expensive jeweler who's done custom work for me. I'll get it reset in a less snaggy ring, flanked by two birthstones. :-)
