Doing laundry for oneself, a husband and two children is another order of magnitude, but I also have a lovely new washer and dryer all my own. They cost more than cars I have owned, but the washer has a handwash function (gentle and intermittent), so I can machine-wash silk blouses and cotton dresses without fear. I also have a clothes pole, just a large wooden dowel like you have in a closet, across one end of the utility room, and I hang the drip-dry things there fresh out of the washer(cement floor) and I hang the wash-n-wear things there fresh out of the dryer. And I have a worktable that I put folded clothes on, so I can fold them right out of the dryer. And a box to collect socks until both members of a pair appear, which can take days.
