The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, June 26, edition that the
federal government is ready throw $30-million behind a plan to make Canada
the global leader in environmentally friendly fuel cell technology for
cars. The Globe's Heather Scoffield writes that the money will be directed
at small and medium-sized businesses supporting the fuel cell systems
developed by Ballard Power Systems, with the aim of keeping Ballard and the
fuel cell industry on the leading edge of pollution-free car technology.
The money will also support a new fuel cell research institute, which will
be a virtual electronic network, and a testing facility in Vancouver, say
unnamed government sources. The Globe says an official announcement is
expected this summer. The government will expect the federal money to be
matched by private sector commitments so that for every dollar Ottawa sinks
in to the industry, private sector sources match it with three to five
dollars.
