I totally agree. In fact, this online discussion in which we are currently engaged in a profound result of the internet. But I believe the benefits of technological innovations are often over-stated when such innovations are first introduced - sometimes due to investor enthusiasm. You only need to go back and read historical accounts of claims made during the early years of telegraph, telephone, radio or television to see this. My favorite was the belief when television was first introduced that it would severely diminish use of the radio - of course the negative impact on radio was never realized, what with more radio stations and higher radio audiences worldwide now than ever in history. We all think that there is a strong likelihood that the Amazon book business will render bricks & mortar bookstores extinct - but who knows, we may still have bookstores twenty years from now. I still go to bookstores - and I am characterized by many to be an extremely wired individual.
