Rubberband guns are a worthy substitute. All the fun without the waste. And they come in "gatling" gun style. Very cool. You are sure to be the life of the party. Or at least the one being chased down the street.

(I have a problem, I admit silly, about buying stuff that is
immediately trash)

And that is one of your good qualities - I wouldn't change it.

Silly String is like spray paint that's all gluey and dries real fast. The propellant (propane?) is barely keeping it dissolved, and it coagulates out like egg white in hot water as soon as it hits air.

I saw one of those "best marriage videos" irritainment specials a coupla weeks ago - and the bride and groom get caught in a Canned String Ambush. They are looking like something out of "Alien" when - oopsie me!! - one of the nascent skeins traverses the lit candles on the wedding cake. Like that Life picture of that Vietnamese monk who flambeed himself on some Saigon street, except fortunately the flames lasted two seconds. Only real casualty - the young couples' eyebrows.

I don't know a lot about Silly String or Superstrings. I do know there are two secrets to string can telephones. The string must be held taught, so the vibration of the diaphragm (can bottom) is duplicated in the receiving diaphram. (2) The string must not stretch or have give (as nylon does). Preshrunk cotton twine works well, but wire is the best of all.
Now, how does the sound-power phone work?
