Okay, jp, I "get it." :-) Here goes:

Agnostic is a term that should be used only in the religious sphere. It means, quite simply, that you "don't know". Some people are agnostics because they basically are indifferent to religious questions. Other agnostics are anything but indifferent; they are forever asking questions about religious matters, but can never convince themselves that they have found the right answer. I belong to the latter category.

The difference between you and me, in practical terms, is really very small.

You believe in a "Something" of which you have had an "experience," and which you do not question. You conduct your life in accordance with your understanding of what that "Something" is.

I do not know whether there is a "Something," in general, still less whether that "Something" is benign, malign, or neutral. At the same time, I can construct an idea of what that "Something" would have to be like, for me to worship it. And I conduct my life in accordance with my understanding of what that ideal "Something" would be, if it existed.

Two approaches, same result: you are an "it-iser," I am an "as-iffer."

As for the social order, question away! It has nothing to do with agnosticism, or with God -- unless you feel you should Worship the Powers That Be, which is unlikely.

Joan

Nonononono - don't trust X to run the world - she's a dictator at heart. Don't know about Joan yet. Have yet to meet anyone who could be trusted with the task.
