AT, most brokers don't allow shorting of BB's. Marginability has nothing to do with being able to borrow, unless the broker or the clearing house they use have an internal rule. Some stock are also not available to short, IRID is a good case. I have tried every day since the end of May to borrow more IRID, and have had no luck. Here is a post by steve yamner, a trader at Yamner & Co speaking on point: #reply-7881484 and another speaking about the 5 dollar rule most brokers have: #reply-8821278.

AT,

In addition to what Mama Bear told you, there could be an additional factor at work on Iridium. Lately it has been subject to NASD rule UPC 11830, which places additional restrictions on shorting. I have heard that some brokers automatically declare UPC 11830 stocks nonshortable so they don't have to worry about it.
