OT: HDTV

yeah, just saw a high def tv demo at Sony Wonder in NYC and was completely blown away. I heard about the detail increase and was kinda blah about it, but when i saw it i was floored by how much the extra detail added to the overall experience. amazing. Can't wait for programming (other than 'the tonight show') to start HD transmission.

The TeraLogic card itself is burly and offers not only digital HDTV reception, but also legacy NTSC broadcast and cable reception so you can still pick up non-HDTV broadcasts along with full DVDplayback.

I really hope those STB engineers have something up their sleeves. From the article it looks like S3 and nVidia will probably be licensing the Janus designs, so if 3dfx really wanted to it could probably license it from them as well. That card certainly has all the bells and whistles. But somehow i think they'll probably develop something internally. Sans the DVD playback and video scaler, it should only be about 50-60 worth of parts to slap on HDTV receiving/decoding capabilities. Given the 3500 "video-pod", i'm pretty sure 3dfx is giving a lot of thought to adding hdtv support.
