Free access - will start for real in Europe in order to broaden subscriber base, also when you buy certain PC's you'll get free service, but it's a ways off and I ask the simple question, "How can these companies survive? Ads? E-commerce deals? Spam?"

With consolidation in the works there will probably be several large ISOP-networks left in the end, maybe ATT-ATHM, AOL, ELNK-SEEK, etc. Like the big TV networks these could end up being free but then they'll be loaded up with ads and other obnoxious marketing aimed at the subscriber and some will wish they could just pay for the service and avoid all the spam.

There might also be services within the services you have to pay for. Lots of them which the ISP gets a piece of. Also telephony, movies, music, etc.

One way or another the companies have to make money. That's what's important to remember. So in the end it may not make any difference how. Watch evolution at work here.
