True, you don't spent $3 billion to improve search capabilities. But you do spend $3 billion if you recognize how poorly DEC/CPQ management has grown this asset. You spend $3 billion if you believe you can transform AV into a $6 billion property. Changing AV into a portal is a possibility, but it isn't the only strategy. IPO'ing 45% of AV could give CMGI almost a zero cost basis while retaining full control of AV. There are strategies that don't require AV and LCOS to square off as head-to-head portal competitors.
