Lucius, Frank, Thread, I just came across this rather sobering article [in the light of what I have just posted a few messages back] which was recently written in teledotcom.com

June 21, 1999, Issue: 413
Section: Tele.Contrarian

The Bell Breakup @ 15 Years
A. Michael Noll

January 1 marked the 15th anniversary of the breakup of the Bell system.
Unlike 15 years ago, telecommunications is now an exciting industry, with
much merger activity and impressive technology. What can we learn from this
massive restructuring and the factors that motivated it?

[for remainder use the link below]
---------------

It recalls some of the other factors which were at play at the time of Divestiture One. In retrospect, and with the aid of this article, I now recall more vividly that there was, in fact, another kind of convergence on the horizon at that time. That being, between computers and telecommunications, when T wanted to enter into the computer business.

The Internet hadn't even shown up yet on anyone's serious screen yet, as the 'net was still fiddling with 2.4 kb/s lines between university and research hubs. Whew! I'm getting old...

Enjoy, Frank Coluccio
