I no longer call myself a libertarian, because I think that for the most part, libertarianism in its ideal state is somewhat appealing on social issues, but if enacted would result in total chaos. I do support the decriminalization of drugs.

I took a lot of American history in high school and college. Just what books did you read which convinced you that America was a great place for the poor, incidentally? I could trot out the child labor statistics, the descriptions of life for the average American, the mortality rates, etc., but I am so right on this issue and you are so unsubtantiated that it does not feel like a very good use of my time. The gradual institution of income tax and a safety net have been, on the whole, very positive advancements for most Americans.

I can promise you that college textbooks when I was at university were not government approved.
